16 Things I learnt in 2016

One of my favourite YouTuber did a video post entitled '16 things I learnt in 2016'. This video inspired me to write this blog post. Here are  sixteen (16) things I learnt in 2016 that changed my year. Leave a comment below telling me some of the things you learnt in 2016.

1) Be Positive

I have learnt how powerful positive thinking can be. I always thought I was a pretty positive person; however 2016 taught me that I harboured a number of negative thoughts in my mind that held me back from achieving greatness. So, everyday I try my best to project the thoughts that I want to materialise in my life. It is a work in progress but my life has improved as a result of positive thinking.

2) Change is Good

I have said this countless times. I fear change. I like the certainty that comes from familiarity. However, in 2016 I changed jobs, friendships and relationships and now I understand that in order to grow and improve you have to make changes to your overall life.

3)Vision Boards are a Must

If you don't have a vision board what are you doing with your life? I created my vision board on Canva and used it as my computer background and within six months I started ticking off things from vision board. It does work and it makes you actively pursue your dreams and goals.

4) Leave Your Comfort Zone

Sometimes we are happy with just getting by. That has been me for a few years. I was hiding out in my comfort zone and i did not want to leave. Leaving your comfort zone is the walkway to achieving your dreams.

5) Experiences are Better than Stuff

Do you realize that we have got very good at collecting stuff and the more stuff we have the more trapped and depressed we are? However, experiences is what creates memories, facilitate growth and shapes our core selves. So, in 2016 i started going on road trips, exploring my city, taking small excursions and experiencing life.

6) Choose Your Inner Circle Wisely

I have always known this but in 2016 I really realized that the wrong friends and relationships can ruin your life.

7) All that Glitters is NOT Gold

I have learnt that not everyone, everything and every situation that appears to be great and prefect is actually that.

8) Don't Let Others Control YOUR Life

Yes!!!! I said It. This is so important. Often we allow others to control our major decisions, etc. It is key to remember that you have one life to live and you have to live it.

9) Planned Vacations are a Must

This allows you to gain more experiences.

10) Don't Allow Fear to Control Your Life

This quote says it all!!!

Image result for lionheartweekender
By the time you read this post I would have started my holiday road trip. The first road trip I took was in summer and it was great!!! Blogmas Days 11-12

One way I deal with my holiday stress is to take a vacation. However, here are five other tips to help you deal with holiday stress.

Avoid Traffic/ Conduct Business Early

One of the most stressful things during the holiday is traffic. You can deal with traffic in one or two ways: first, you can choose not to go out or you can conduct any errands earlier in the day. Lunch time or evenings are the worst time to head on the road. So, consider the traffic situation before leaving home.

No Last Minute Shopping

Do not shop last minute. Last minute shopping is one of the most stressful thing you can do during the holidays. This is due to the fact that you are not the only one who has the brilliant idea to shop last minute; therefore, the stores are overcrowded. Also, chances are you will not be able to find what you are looking for. This in turns adds to your frustration.

Do Not Over Spend

Need I say more? I don't know about you but for me being broke is a very stressful situation. Being broke in December means you will have to sit and stress about how to survive in January.  So, watch your spending and remember that January is just around the corner.

Take a Break

Are you aware that you do much more during the holidays and so 9 times out of 10 you are exhausted? Exhaustion and dealing with family issues or drama that inevitably occur during family holiday activities can add to your stress levels. So, de-stress and take a break. It can be for a few hours or even a day or two. Just ensure you give you mind, body and emotions a break.

Be Positive

Whether you like it or not often the holidays are stressful. Therefore, your attitude will determine how you manage the stress. So, I would recommend that you try to turn your lemons into lemonade or lemon pie. Positivity always wins. You can start each stay with a positive quote or affirmation. This is helpful in maintaining a positive mood.

Sh*t Gets Real

Blogmas- Day 4

I don't think I have ever written a post like this before. If this is not your cup of tea I am fine with you skipping this post and coming back tomorrow. If you want to see me vent; then you are at the right place. Guys, I need to vent. I need to keep it real for you all. As I type my post today, I am mad as hell. In fact I am Madea mad (you know Madea is craaaaazy).

Anyone who knows me would be shocked at the above meme. It is not often that I become extremely angry. In fact, I almost always do not use strong language. However, I am reeling and seeping with anger, frustration and annoyance because of situations at work that is out of my control.

Do you notice how powerless you feel when things are out of your control? Especially, the things that immediately affect you.   Sometimes, these things make you feel like a pressure cooker, just boiling waiting to explore. So, what do I or what should I do?

Hold Up!!!! What??!!! Appreciate Life???!!!  Ask yourself, how does this incident at work affect the price of rice? (Tell me if you understand the terminology).  The answer is nada, nil, zip, zilch, no and the list goes on. So, breath......take a walk..........return..........smile and move on.

As always, thank for shopping by and come back again tomorrow.

Creating the Ultimate Girl Squad

Blogmas - Day 3

Squads are the new hit thing among the millennial. Being a child of the 90's I did not get the whole squad trend or maybe I could just be weird (LOL). Seriously though, I have analysed the concept and now I can see the merit in having a squad.

Now, let me break it down for you. A squad is a group of common friends that you have, that you hang out together at the same time. Now I think about it, I remember Carrie and the girls from Sex and the City. Those girls would be the ultimate 90’s girl squad.

With that in mind, girl squads can be great if you have the right type of squad. So, today I am going to lay the ground work of how to create the ultimate girl squad.

In creating my Ultimate Girl Squad I have painstakingly compiled five types of girls who would comprise the squad.

These girls are (but are limited to):

Xena Warrior Princess

At the top of the list, I have Xena Warrior Princess type of girl. This girl is a bad*ss.

She is strong, fierce and downright brave.

She is also the explorer who just gets up and goes.

Charlotte

Then, you have the cheerful cheerleader. She is the positive point of the group. She is also supportive and kind. Just think of Charlotte from Sex and the City.

The Planner Girl

You cannot forget your planner girl. She is systematic, organised and efficient. You aspire to be like her because she amazes you with her creativity.

You are amazed at how on point she is and so you are motivated to get you sh*t together.

Posh Spice

Three words: prissy, pretty and posh. This is the lady of the group. Her hair, nails, clothes and speech is always on ‘fleek’.

The Ride or Die Chick

This type of girl is LOYAL. Notice that the word loyal is in all caps. This is because this friend can be your vault. She is also the one that you can call at a moment’s notice and she will be there. She is the type of friend that will be there though the ups and downs.

Please offer your own girls' squad suggestions. Also, tell me which one of these type of girls you are?

Finally, remember to share your thoughts in the comments and stop by tomorrow for another Blogmas post.

Three Tricks to Staying Positive throughout the Day

Blogmas - Day 2

Have you ever noticed that when you start your day  on a positive note there is always something or someone who tries to suck your positive energy from you. I guess it is the nature of life. However, it is important to note that positive energy attracts positive energy. Therefore, as we countdown to Christmas and then the new year we have to allow good things to come into our lives. Additionally, I am learning that staying positive is an important practice that one needs to engage in on the road to happiness.

Here are three tricks you can use to stay positive throughout the day:

Music

Did you know that music can influence your mood and attitude? With this in mind,  you can create playlists of your favourite feel good songs that you can play throughout the day. I love YouTube and I am always using my laptop so I have created a number of playlists for my different moods and I find that often it takes just popping in my headphones to put a positive spin on my mood.

Free Playlist Makers

Meme Me

A few months I started to follow some positive thinking posters on the gram and can I tell you that they have worked wonders for my mindset.

In the mornings while I scroll through my posts I see all the funny memes that crack me up along with the positive ones.

I in turn share them and spread the positive vibes. This makes me feel great and I am also encouraging the group of people that I surround myself with to be positive by sharing with them.

Walking Away

What?!! Walking away?

Yes, I said it. Sometimes you have to walk away from a negative situation or person to maintain your positive mindset.

Case in point, I woke up feeling like crap; so I decided to change my mood. I was off to a great start with positive meme  and thoughts. I was thankful and expressing gratitude through prayer.

I was off to work bright eyed and bushy tailed with my positive mindset. Then, wave after wave of negative people and situations came rolling in.

On a side note, have you ever realized that the moment you choice to be positive it is the moment crap starts to rain on your parade.

Anyways, I just started walking. I walked away and it worked. The long and short of it is that in all situations you need to preserve your peace, joy, happiness and positive mindset.

Stop by tomorrow for another post in this journey. Also, please remember to live a comment and sign up posts to be emailed to you.

How to Eat Healthy Fast Food this Summer

Summer is a time for fun, sun relaxation and eating anything we see without thinking about the consequences for our bodies.

Am I the only one who does this?

If you are like me or if you want to eat healthier this summer these tips will help to eat healthier fast food this summer:

 Control Your Portions

Do not order extra large combos or go to those all you can eat buffets and try to eat everything in sight. Instead, select the smaller sandwiches and meals that contain less fats.

Eat More Jerked or Grilled Meats

You can have jerk chickens, grilled vegetables, or seafood; instead of deep fried chicken or chips. Remember the goal is to eat less fatty foods without punishing yourself.

Check to Make Sure the Dish is Actually Healthy

Remember, not because a dish proclaims that it is a healthier choice that does not meant it is actually healthier. Find out about the nutrition facts of that smoothie or salad that you are about to consume. For example, many fast food salads are a diet minefield, smothered in unhealthy dressing and fried toppings.

Don’t be afraid to special order.

Finally, many menu items can be made healthier with a few tweaks and substitutions. For example, you can ask to hold the sauce or dressing or serve it on the side. Or you can request a wheat bun for your hamburger or whole-grain bread for your sandwich.

How to Earn Extra Money During Summer

If you are like me, then by now you have realized that it is essential for you to have multiple streams of income.  Summer is officially here and so for some of us; this is the time we think about what else we can do to make extra cash. Here are some simple ideas that you can multiple into extra cash.

Rent a Room

You can rent a furnished room in your home on Airbnb. You decide on your price per night and your guests can pay you online before they ever get to your door. I like this option because you already have everything you have to get started. Go to Airbnb for more details.

Summer Day Camp/ Day Care

You can have your own summer day camp or day care for kids. You can offer your services at a  competitive rate so has to attract clients. Another way to attract clients is to create  fun lists of activities that the kids can do on a daily basis.

Remember before starting to check the laws of your country/ state to see if there are no legal restrictions.

Plan Summer Parties

Do you enjoy planning events?

Are you a stickler for details?

Then maybe planning summer parties is a prefect way for you earn extra money.

You can plan summer theme parties in which persons can pay to enter. Another way is that you can plan events in your home or back yard in which you can sell pastries, ice creams, jewellery, D.I.Y creations, etc.

These events can be planned for children or adults.

Don't knock it until you have tried it. Just use your imagination to create some great ideas that can be turned into a business idea.

Summer Tours

You can organize tours to explore your city or other excursions.  Here in Jamaica people often plan beach excursions on public holidays. Persons then pay to attend these excursions. There are often single and couple rates provided. This might sound simple, yet persons make money from this because they promote these excursions as events that are fun and relaxing. Therefore, people look forward to attending.

Relaxation Ideas/Tips for Moms- D.I.Y. Sundays

Spa Day at Home

Source
A great relaxation tip for moms is  having a weekly spa day at home. You can add a number of beauty routines to your spa day activities such as doing a baking soda body scrub, painting your nails, scrubbing your feet, steaming your face, shampooing your hair, shaving your eyebrows, etc.

This idea can be changed to fit your personality or beauty needs. Therefore, it can be an elaborate event or a simple few hours in which you lock out world or family and pamper you.

source

Take a Nap

Yes, I said it. This tip is simplistic in nature but trust me when I say it works. There are times that moms are conditioned that they need to be superwomen in order to be great moms, which means they need to see and be everything to the people around them. However, in doing so often we become ragged and rundown and then the same people we are taking care of turn their noses up at us. So, taking a nap during the day often gives us a time to relax our mind and body and in essence it pushes the reset button and refreshes us.

Stop Freaking Out

source

I know this has been said more than once but I am going to say it again. How we respond to the situations around us can either add to or decreases our stress levels. Therefore, a very important relaxation tip is to stop working ourselves up about situations that will not affect our overall life, happiness, health, wealth, etc. Simply put, stop placing major importance on trivial/minor issues in our daily life. When you do this you will realize that you will be more relaxed and people will actually prefer to be around you.

Do You Daily

Do You Daily means that on a daily basis you can do something that you love or something that you do only for you. This can be unique to you and your interests. Some ideas that came to my mind are: you can take ten minutes to watch a YouTube video or take 30 minutes to read a chapter or two of your current favourite book, or going to the park to have lunch, or take a walk and see something different. Whatever you do is up to you.

I hope you find these ideas/tips beneficial. Please leave a comment letting me know whether you plan to implement any of these or if you are already doing any if these. Also, share your own relaxation ideas/tips

How To Stay Positive

I have been reminded recently that it is hard to to stay positive. Life can sometimes get hard and overwhelming, so it is up to us to fight to stay positive. Here are some things that you can do daily to help you stay positive:

Create a Gratitude Journal

I have been hearing about doing a gratitude journal for some time. However truth be told I never gave it a second thought until recently. Simply put a gratitude journal is a diary of things for which one is grateful
source
My first reaction to the idea of starting a gratitude journal is what will I write about.
I did not understand that gratitude journals are used by individuals who wish to focus their attention on the positive things in their lives.

Once i understood this, I knew i could write about anything I feel grateful for in my life.

In essence, a gratitude journal should be uniquely you. Therefore, you should be the one to decorate, organize and include any that represents what you are grateful for. Therefore your gratitude journal could be an ordinary notebook that you decide to decorate (or not) and use for this purpose. Happy Writing!!!!

Find a Hobby

source
Sometimes we forget how important it is for us to have a hobby. A hobby is a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one's leisure time

A hobby helps keeps you engaged and happy. I  find that when I am busy focusing on something uplifting I do not have time to focus on the negative things that are occurring in and around your life.
I recommend doing something that is fun and different from what you would normally do.  Hobbies can include collecting themed items and objects, engaging in creative and artistic pursuits, playing sports, or pursuing other amusements. Remember that variety is the spice of life, so do something different from your everyday routine.

Go Out & About

source
I am a home body, therefore I do not want to leave home unless I absolutely have to. However, I have found that going out and about helps me stay positive. You don't have to plan major trips to have an excuse to go explore. What I found works for me is to choose one day out of the week (Saturday) to explore or do something fun outside the house that is out of my everyday routine .

You can also mix things up by planning monthly or quarterly road trips to places that you have always wanted to see. Just the act of planning, organizing and implement your plans will positively impact your mood.

Implementing 'Me Time'

source

Last but certainly not the least is 'Me Time'. 'Me Time' is just ensuring that at least each day you find time to relax and be alone. All of the above activities will not be possible if you do not implement 'Me Time' in your daily routine.

Remember, It is also okay to let your children, family and significant other know that this is important to your well being and overall state of mind. It is also okay for you to not to feel guilty for wanting to be alone.

If you are unable to get 'Me Time' every day then you can select a day in the week that you can take a couple of hours for yourself.

Benefits of Starting Another Blog

source
Is there such a thing as having too many blogs? I contemplate this the first time i started another blog. I agonized over whether it was the right decision, would i have the support of my core group, why was it necessary and the list went on.

The truth is starting a another blog is a big decision. You need to ensure that you are starting a new blog for the right reasons. Here are some reason why you should start another blog:

To Diversify

Successful bloggers are successful because they have a niche. This is a good thing. However, often there comes a time when you want to diversify your content. That can be problematic if what you want to post is not compatible with your niche. At this point, you can consider starting another blog. This can allow you to diversify your content without driving away your core readers. You can also give your core readers the option of following your new blog by promoting it on your main blog. This way you can gain traffic for your new blog and your readers who are interested can enjoy your new content.

To Reach a New Audience

Starting a new blog can can help you to reach a new audience that you might never have appealed before. This can help you to broaden your readership based and allow you to meet new people.

To broaden Your Skills

Starting a new blog can help you to become a better writer. the more you write it is the more you develop your skills. It is more beneficial to you when you do not place yourself in a box. Therefore, the more topics you are able to share the better it is for you.
