Your Successful- Really?- AHHHH MONDAYS

I am feeling very reflective as I type this post. The New Look, New Attitude -Lioness Rebirth Blog Event is all but over. The final give-away (Pay-pal) will close on Tuesday night. A number of blog friends, readers, followers, fellow bloggers came and showed their support. With all of this said, I am feeling very appreciative today. 

I keep reading the comments that says 'congrats on having a successful blog'. I have had the conversation with my mom about what it really means to have a successful blog.  I have learnt in my 29 years on this earth that success is relative. The definition of success varies depending on an individual's perceptions and beliefs. Do I think my blog is successful? The answer for me is neither yes or no. For me, my blog was successful the day I gained my first follower and the day I had my first blog comment. For me, the fact that I had one other person reading my posts, besides me, meant that my blog was successful. 

I don't look at the number of followers, or the stats, or the number of blog friends, or the awards to gage my success in blogging. Yes, they are important; I don't deny that. But, would I still be blogging if I did not have the validation (the proverbial pat on the back)? My answer is hell yes.

In Jamaica blogging is not a common practice. It is not apart of the culture. Many don't understand it and so many don't see the need for it. Besides my immediate family, most persons in my everyday life don't know I blog. Therefore,  my audience is from around the world. They are people I have never met and might never meet. But, we are all joined together by our love for the written word, our personal triumphs and failures. 

So my friends, this has been a journey and what I love about this journey is that I cannot predict the ending. I have said this countless times, the possibilities are limitless.

How to Gain More Readers Through Infographics- D.I.Y. Sundays

While a blog is famously known to consist of articles (i.e. made up of words), often times readers need a visual aid to help them digest the information—and no we’re not just talking about having a complimentary photo to make an article look more attractive. We're talking about the very popular growing inforgraphic. 

Inforgraphics tell a story in their own way by creatively and artistically displaying factoids and other interesting tidbits of information on a chart or other animated image. There are extremely eye-catching and can offer an interesting new way to post some of your content. Not to mention they do great for search engine optimization, especially if it gets popular on Twitter or Facebook and goes viral. This means you get tons of new readers.

While typically you need to have some background knowledge in graphic design to create one, there are a few websites that have made it easy for the average blogger to create his or her own infographic for free. The top 3 sites are listed below.

1.      Wordle—Like the name suggests, this infographic-making tool does some really neat things with words. Simply type a few words or even an entire body of text into the appropriate box and the site will automatically convert it to an artistic "word cloud." If you don’t like what the site has created for you, you can tweek the artwork yourself and change colors and fonts as well as themes. It's free to use but make sure you have the latest edition of Java or it won't run—if you don’t know worries, it can be easily downloaded for free. You can then directly post the infographic onto your blog or print it out for free for your records.

2.      StatsilkThis site gives users the opportunity to creatively display a set of statistics that pertain to the U.S. or the world as a whole. This is because this visualization software creates really intricate and interactive maps. Thus, if you get your hands on a set of facts or stats that deal with a certain region, state, or country why not make a map? You can literally paint a better picture for you audience instead of just using words.

3.      Creately—Lastly, this website lets bloggers create all kinds of "creative" diagrams, flowcharts, and concept maps. You may think that you'll never need to use one, but it can be a fun way to explain how something has evolved over time or use it to compare and contrast ideas. The possibilities are endless. The only downside is that the site only offers five free diagrams. Once those are used you have to pay to use its services.
While infographics surely aren't the only way to step outside of the box, they are a great way to start. Don’t forget about video blogging and podcasts too—they can make your readers really engaged.

New Look, New ATTITUDE Give-away 1

This give-away is brought to you by the author of the e-book, The New Death and others, James Hutchings. Mr. Hutchings recently contacted me and requested I do a review of his book. Let me make this clear, I am in no way being compensated for this review. Also, the views expressed are my own. 

First Reaction
I was freaked out when I saw the cover of the book. I honestly think that it does not do the book justice. After examining the cover I thought the book would be filled with savagery and zombies. Just think of anything dark and sinister and that came to my mind. However, that was not the case. For me the cover doesn't adequately  capture the essence of the book. Basically, I am saying don't judge a book by its cover. This is one such book.

The Book
First let me say, I love good literature. I love to read material that will enable me to sink my teeth in it, that will play on my imagination and leave me wanting to turn to the next page.  This book offered all of these things for me. I really appreciated the mixture of myths, legends, folklore and satire that Hutchings presented in the novel. To me, he was in a sense making a commentary of how society has replace certain values with commercialization. However, he did not offer his point of view in a rigid manifesto format or endless paragraphs of triads. The great thing about this book is that you are reading his stories and poems which are enlightening and witty,while us giving food for thought. With all of this in mind, I think the book offers a good balance whereas some of the stories fell flat for me; I found that there were a lot more stood out in my mind.

Creating Your Brand- DIY Sundays

When most of us think about a brand the following readily comes to mind:

Meaning: (of goods and merchandise) marked or labelled by a distinctive word or symbol indicating exclusive rights

Context example: branded merchandise is that bearing a standard brand name

However, Angela Bain takes it a step further. According to Bain "a brand is more than the name or visual element used to represent your company. It is the emotional and psychological associations that a person makes with your business, product or service."  Today, we will look at how to create such a brand.

5 Steps to Creating Your Brand

Get a Logo

Get a  logo and place it everywhere. In blogging I have come to realize that a blog's logo often take the form of a blog button. There are certain blog buttons that are synonymous with the blogs they represent. once you see that button you make a connect to the blog. that for me is great branding. In essence I am saying that your logo should be unique should stand out, should represent what your blog has to offer.

Develop a Tagline

Develop a tagline. Write a memorable, meaningful and concise statement that captures the essence of your brand. This was hard for me to do because my blog did not have an obvious niche. For me, my tagline: providing information that matters helped me to carve my niche. It sounds weird but it did. Now i have a better idea of what i want to offer to my readers and my readers will also know what to expect form Lioness Rebirth: the Blog.

    Have a Mission Statement

    I have learnt that on your blog you should have a section that clearly states what your brand is about, what is your brand message and your tagline. This is usually found on the ABOUT page of most blogs. This will help your readers to understand the concept behind your brand. It can also let your readers' to identify with your blog if they agree with or like your massage.

      Have a Voice

      Create a "voice" for your company that reflects your brand. This voice should be applied to all written communication and incorporated in the visual imagery of all materials, online and off. Is your brand friendly? Be conversational. Is it ritzy? Be more formal. You get the gist.

        Be True and Consistent 

        Be true to your brand. Customers won't return to you--or refer you to someone else--if you don't deliver on your brand promise. This has been something that I am often mindful of. There are a number of things I would like to show case on my blog, however I have to be mindful of the fact that my person likes and preferences might no be those of my readers. Also these likes and preferences might not be linked to your brand.  Also, remember to  be consistent.  This can take the form of posting regularly. This was a major challenge for me in year one. I would build a momentum after weeks of regular posting and then stop posting due to the pressures of work or home. This i realized, caused me to lose consistent readers. I had to learn to write on the weekends and schedule my posting for the coming week. Remember if you cannot be consistent, your attempts at establishing a brand will fail. 


          On a note of branding, I would like to say thank you to Jacqui from Wacky Jacqui's Designs. She is responsible for the new look (redesign) of Lioness Rebirth. It has been a long and scary journey to get to this point. Long in the sense that I have wanted to do this for a while now and finally, it is done. Scary because I was afraid that the end result would not be what i liked or wanted.
          I must say that I love the design. I must also commend Jacqui for her time and patience. I know I was a very picky customer but she listened to my ideas and suggestions as well as she gave great advise (you were right about the date). More than anything I love the fact that I was able to get great service for a really affordable cost.           Words of Wisdom- Positive Wednesday

          This week I am giving you some 'food for thought'. Here are some words of wisdom from Maya Angelou.

          AAAHHHH MONDAYS- V DAY.......

          V- DAY is tomorrow. Truth be told, I am not feeling V-DAY. I have placed V-Day on hold for a few years now. Maybe one day I will take if down from that old shelf and dust it off. Until then, I will be on the sideline enjoying the red and white confetti. 

          A Brief Overview of Valentines Day

          Remembering Whitney.......

          There will be no D.I.Y Sundays today. Instead, I want to remember Whitney.I woke up to last night to hear that Whitney Houston had past away at 48 year old. I am not one of those persons, who is wrapped up in the lives of celebrities; I do not stalk them on the computer, television or radio. However, last time tears came to my eyes and they keep rolling. I had no idea how much my life had been impacted by this person I have never met or knew personally until the tears came. I guess that is the power of music.

           I do not want to speculate so, I am not going to do so. I will however say, like so many others, I was waiting for her to bless us with her gift from God once again. I wanted to see her doing what i thought she was born to do. However, i guess God/Fate/Destiny had other plans.

          This last song is very dear to me. It has got me through a number of situations that would have broken my spirit. So, I wanted to share and say rest in peace Ms. Houston.

          Still Working Out The Kinks.......

          The redesign is coming along nicely. I think it is safe to say that by next week  every thing should be up and running.

          On a different note, I must say I am absolutely loving Reggae month- February. In honour of Reggae month I would like to present the musical styling of Ken Boothe. I almost fell off my chair when I found this video. This video was recorded long before my time, but it's still rocking today. Enjoy.

          What are your ROOTS????- Positive Wednesday

          We are often so busy trying to be someone else that we have not taken the time to really sit down, so to speak, and examine/appreciate our roots. 

          It seems reinvention is the order of the day. Let me just say that reinvention is often a good thing. But, just remember that your roots are what keep you grounded. They are like a shield against the trails of life, without them we are often swept away by life's adversities. 

          So, embrace your roots today.

          Trench Town Rock- AAHHH MONDAY!!!!!


          February is Reggae month in Jamaica. If you did not know, Jamaica is the birth place of Reggae.  Bob Marley is one of the many icons, who is synonymous with Reggae.


          On Saturday I went to Trench Town for the first time. I was there with my family to celebrate the earth strong (birthday) of the King of Reggae. It was also a chance to expose my five year old to the culture first hand. She just started learning about Bob Marley in school and she had no clue about who he was. Ask her about Bruno Mars or Justine Berber and she as no trouble rapping out a song. The tides are turning i can feel it.

          I am almost ashamed to say this, but is was my first time time in Trench Town. I know that I will be back. Thousands came out to participate. We had people from worldwide just there to enjoy the music and soak in the culture. The mood was electrifying.  There was a lot of positive energy in the venue. It was also a chance for me to see a number of Jamaican artistes preform.  I also noted with pride and admiration that the Marley children have done their legacy proud.

          The Versatility of Shampoo - D.I.Y Sundays

          Yesterday, my mom gave me the idea for today's post. She was washing and I saw her using shampoo to remove the stubborn stains from the collar of her blouse. Then it hit me, like baby oil, shampoo should have a variety of uses. So here we go.

          What is Shampoo?

          Shampoo is liquid preparation  that is used for the removal of oils, dirt, skin particles, dandruff, environmental pollutants and other contaminant particles that gradually build up in hair. This is done by washing the hair with the product.

          The Various Uses of Shampoo
          • Shampoo can be used for cleaning out combs and hair brushes. Just soak the items in a solution of shampoo and water, then scrub them completely clean.

          • Shampoo can be used mixed with conditioner  instead of shaving cream. Use a ratio of 1:1 and your face, arm pits, and legs will be soft and smooth.

          • Like i said before,  Shampoo can be used to as a spot cleaner and it will remove stains, as well as ring around the collar.

          • A mixture of  shampoo and baking soda can be used to clean chrome on vehicles. This gives it a nice shine. Remember to rinse thoroughly before buffing it dry.

          • A nice beauty tip is to fill a small bowl with shampoo and soak your fingernails and cuticles. This not only cleans, but softens.

          • Shampoo can brighten your walls too. Use shampoo and a clean, damp rag to wipe your walls. Wipe the air clean and allow the area to air dry.

          • Shampoo is great to clean the outside of your refrigerator and stove. It will remove greasy spots, as well as dirt and other food spills too. 

          • Rub shampoo into worn areas in circles to clean and bring back the colour of your accessories. It will protect your shoes from salt stains as well.

          •  Shampoo also does a great job on soap scum because it rinses clean. You can use it to buff a shine into your chrome faucets as well.

          So, today make shampoo your new best friend.  Remember these suggestion have not been scientifically proven, so use your own judgement.

          Just When........

          Just when you think this is it, i need a break. It is often right at this moment the sun begins to shine.  The sun is shining for me tonight.

          All week, I have been so busy with paper at my full time j.o.b, that I could not even think about blogging. Tonight as i scour over the papers i took home for the weekend; i did not even want to consider my blog.

          However, I could not stay away. It is a blessing that I logged in because I would not have read the comments that were left by my reader at that exact moment. I would not have seen the following responses to the Positive Wednesday question: What is your dream?

          My dreams involve making a better life for my children, both through what I can do personally at home, and leaving a better planet for them to grow up on... 

           My dream is that they will find a cure for the diseases that plague our country. Carli Alice
